Mallory Park Sunday 2nd July 2006 After a hot Saturday at home, and barbeque in the garden it was clear that the Sunday was going to be a scorcher. The BR Minis racing team, well the driver at least, set off with car and trailer bright and early Sunday morning. Arrived at the circuit in good time after a brief rain shower. The last cooling off for the whole of the day. This looked like a good meeting with the paddock full with Fords or every hue and size, a bunch of MG Midgets and Sprites, and of course a melee of Mighty Minis. It was a rather early start for the Mighty Minis with scrutineering and qualifying. The elder statesmen of the Super Mighty Minis were allotted a more civilised hour which reflected their status …. and advancing years. Mighty Minis (Class A) Qualifying was the usual frenetic affair and when the dust settled Neil Slark was on pole with Dave Rees alongside. The second row as made up by Adrian Tuckley and Richard Lockwood. A good field was on hand with 18 cars making the start. At great risk to their digestive systems and forgoing a traditional siesta the race was first on after lunch. The weather was doing its best with clear skies and bright sun, giving an air temperature around 30 degrees C. Your intrepid reporter was based up Shaws hairpin and doubled up as No. 1 cameraman. The race start was unseen but all the protagonists made it round in one piece (mostly). The first lap hairpin was the usual frenetic affair with squealing tyres, smoke and frantic avoidance at all points in the pack. The driving was good and fair, though with no untoward contact. As the race progressed a battle ensued between Neil Slark, Dave Rees and Richard Lockwood for the lead. This resolved in a few laps when Neil broke away and opened up a lead whilst Dave and Richard held each other up battling for second place. The gap opened up to about 9 seconds by the end of the race. Dave and Richard continued their battle for the whole race swapping places nearly every lap finally resolving in favour of Dave. The remaining mid-field continued an intense battle with places changing regularly and some close dices going on. Steve Miles was particularly forcible moving up to an eventual fifth place, and Dave Berney finished well in sixth having start in thirteenth position. All drivers can be pleased with their performances and it was a good race for the spectators. Super Might Minis (Class B) Qualifying was our first taste of driving conditions mid-morning. A small, but select bunch of drivers made up the field of nine cars. We were joined for this race by Barry Murphy forsaking his Xtreme Mighty Mini to sample life in the middle of the pack. A far cry from the normal view as he disappears over the horizon on lap one, as happened at Donington last month. Pole position was taken by Neven Kirkpatrick with Alex “Teenwolf” Comis alongside him. Clearly the car surfing is paying dividends. The second row was Dave Kirkpatrick and Tim Harber. Your intrepid reporter fulfilled his destiny by taking last place on the grid. (Car 57 where are you?) There then was a big break during which time a number of Fords raced around, lost wheels and fell over. At long last it was the turn of the Super Mighty Minis. “Gentlemen, it’s time for your sauna” said a smiling marshal as we climbed into our cars to start the race. How right he was! The race started smoothly and the pack entered Gerards as one. Barry Murphy demonstrated a previously unknown skill at sideways motoring as everyone jostled for position. The field then spread out a little as we raced down Stebbe Straight to the Esses. Everyone bunched up again for the late braking area known as Shaws hairpin. By the end of lap 1 Neven Kirkpatrick was in the lead, a position he would hold to the end of the race ahead by some 7.6 seconds by lap 20. The next three cars consisted of Dave Kirkpatrick, Alex Comis and Tim Harber, and they would be covered by 0.1 seconds for the whole race. Positions were swapped regularly and some fine racing was seen. This was resolved on the final lap with Dave coming second, Alex third and Time fourth. Tim was now regretting not adding the extra coat of paint to his car as this would have given him third place. The next three cars made up another battle which resolved in favour of Andy Harrison followed by Mark Ditchburn and Barry Murphy recovering from a moment later in the race. Behind this came your faithful scribe followed by Mike Tarr. For once car 57 decided this was a race and had better do something. With a moment to be proud of executed a pass on Mike at the Esses. Mike, however was not going to let this go and had several demon out braking attempts at the hairpin to regain the position, but, alas, without success. After the race, my team informed me that I was catching Barry Murphey for 7th position, but we ran out of laps. This was a race for all involved to take credit in producing an entertainment for the spectator, and a fair race for all involved. Two weeks time it’s a double header at Cadwell Park (15th-16th July). Come and see us climb the mountain!
